Analysis
- The resolution repeatedly and harshly condemns Israel for numerous human rights violations and violations of international law and makes one-sided demands on Israel while ignoring Palestinian violations. For example, the resolution ignores terror attacks against Israeli civilians within Israel, referring to them only as “tensions and violence” in the “Occupied Palestinian Territory.” This negates the numerous deadly terror attacks that have occurred in Israeli cities. By classifying all of Israel's defensive actions as violations of international law, the resolution seeks to strip Israel of its inherent right to self-defense. The resolution also refers to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem only by its Islamic name, “Haram al-Sharif.”
- Moreover, this year's resolution takes the Palestinian demonization campaign one step further by requesting an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legality of the occupation. There is no question that this is intended to weaken Israel internationally while advancing the Palestinian goal of achieving recognition as a state without having to negotiate with Israel and make concessions.
