Eligio Cedeño

Eligio Cedeño is a exiled Venezuelan banker, and president of CEDEL Group, Venezuela. Cedeño was detained in Venezuela without trial for nearly 3 years for for allegedly circumventing government currency rules to get U.S. dollars. As a result, the United Nations’ Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in September 2009 declared Cedeño’s detention arbitrary, and judge María Lourdes Afiuni released him on this basis. Due to her decision to free Cedeño, Judge Afiuni was herself jailed. Cedeño now lives in the US having been exiled from Venezuela.
