MORAL COURAGE AWARD
Bernard-Henri Lévy
Philosopher, prolific author, filmmaker and humanitarian activist, Bernard-Henri Lévy is one of the foremost public intellectuals in Europe, defending democracy and humanism against totalitarianism and fascism.
One of Lévy’s crowning achievements was his role in founding the Nouveaux Philosophes movement, which sought to challenge systems of authoritarian power. Lévy has published a wide variety of influential texts across his career which has spanned several decades. Perhaps the most significant has been L’Idéologie française, which questioned popular perceptions of France as a nation.
A key aspect of Lévy’s life has been his Jewish identity. His 2017 book, The Genius of Judaism, is an ode to the exceptionalism of Israel and the grandeur of Jewish thought. Lévy has criticized the long history of French antisemitism and publicly spoken against the boycott movement targeting Israel. He was a keynote speaker at the United Nations special session on antisemitism.
A singular figure on the world stage, Bernard-Henri Lévy has been a sometimes controversial, but always compelling, voice in political, social, and philosophical debate for nearly half a century.
