UN Watch brought Neta Heiman Mina to the floor of the U.N. Human Rights Council to ask countries to stop funding UNRWA after an UNRWA teacher held her elderly mother hostage.
Full Remarks:
Thank you, Mr. President.
My name is Neta Heiman Mina. On October 7th, my mother Ditza who was 84 years old at the time was kidnapped from her home in Kibbutz Nir Oz by Hamas terrorists. After she was released we understood that an UNRWA teacher named Abed had held her hostage. Abed held her in poor sanitary conditions without running water and with very little food.
UNRWA books were in the house and she received snacks that were labeled “Not for sale — intended for UNRWA children.” It’s shocking that a person whose salary is paid by international donations and who teaches the future generation in Gaza was holding an elderly hostage.
What will the U.N. do to ensure that Abed never returns to a classroom to teach children? Countries must follow the lead of the U.S. and Switzerland and pull funding for UNRWA — an agency that fuels war. That will be the first step for a future of peace.
Thank you.
