GENEVA — A North Korean defector and 25 advocacy groups are urging nations to protest Pyongyang’s chairmanship of the world’s only multilateral forum for nuclear arms diplomacy.

Former North Korean army captain Kim Joo-il, a defector now living in Britain, says the regime is using the 65-nation Conference on Disarmament to fuel its anti-Western domestic propaganda and sway even skeptical North Koreans.

Advocacy group U.N. Watch’s director Hillel Neuer told reporters Tuesday in Geneva that allowing an “international outlaw” to oversee international arms control efforts is just plain wrong.

Canada is boycotting the conference until North Korea hands off its summer leadership role to the next member nation based on alphabetical order.
