Urgent UN session on Hong Kong crackdown requested by human rights group

August 12, 2019, GENEVA — The Swiss-based human rights group UN Watch today called on European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and UN human rights commissioner Michelle Bachelet to support a call for an emergency session of the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council into “alarming brutality by Chinese-backed Hong Kong police against pro-democracy protesters,” announced Executive Director Hillel Neuer.

Last month, UN Watch invited Hong Kong celebrity singer and pro-democracy activist Denise Ho to address the Geneva-based UNHRC, where she was repeatedly interrupted by the Chinese delegation.

UN Watch is a UN-accredited non-governmental human rights organization, founded in 1993 by legendary civil rights leader Morris Abram, which gives a platform to human rights dissidents from around the globe, including through its acclaimed annual Geneva Summit for Human Rights.
