Cuba receives UN complaint on political prisoner Eduardo Cardet

RADIO MARTI, August 29, 2018—An NGO associated with the United Nations has shown interest in the health of a prominent Cuban political prisoner. The organization’s complaint on the conditions of his detention were sent to the Castro regime’s General Prosecutor’s Office, according to information from Eduardo Cardet’s family.
The Cuban regime received complaints from the NGO UN Watch on the detention conditions of Cardet, coordinator of the Christian Liberation Movement. He is currently detained in the Cuba Si prison in Holguín, where he is isolated, without family visits or phone calls. The Prosecutor’s Office of Holguín informed that the complaints about his situation had been directed to the country, according to a statement from Cardet’s wife to Radio Martí.
Yaimaris Vecino, Cardet’s wife: ‘A public official told us that the complaints were sent from the UN to the General Prosecutor’s Office and that office should give an answer either to the UN or the family regarding the complaint.’
Last 23rd of July, the NGO UN Watch filed a petition to the UN Working Group for Arbitrary Detention to demand that the Cuban government release Cardet. His detention conditions are subject to criticism, and it is how political prisoners are usually treated in Cuba, reports the Camagueyana Free Press Agency.
Jose Agramonte Leyva, Camagueyana Agency for Free Press: ‘We have received information from different jails and prisons in the Camaguey province including Ceramica Roja, Filo 9, Filo 7 and El Campamento de Santa Isabel, located in the Km Nº17 of the Santa Cruz del Sur road. At this moment, there is a total of 58 prisoners. They are forced to cut Sugar Cane Marabou weeds for more than 8 hours a day without proper working conditions or equipment.’
