Hillel Neuer, center, presenting UN Watch’s latest report to Germany’s Bundestag, Sept. 17, 2025

UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer traveled to Berlin last month to release the organization’s 200-page report, Schools in the Grip of Terror, uncovering how for decades Hamas terror chiefs controlled UNRWA’s education system. Germany is the top funder of UNRWA, at some $200 million per year.

At the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, Neuer presented new evidence that Hamas terror chiefs simultaneously served as UNRWA school principals, union leaders, and senior educators — while publicly glorifying terrorism, recruiting children into militant activity, and blocking Holocaust education.

German lawmakers were briefed on how the UN’s top officials were aware of Hamas’s control over its schools yet failed to act.

Neuer’s visit and the UN Watch revelations were reported by Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Berliner Morgenpost, Juedische Rundschau, Hamburger Abendblatt, Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, Thueringer Allgemeine, Braunschweiger Zeiting, Westfalische Rundschau, Harz Kurier, OstThuringer Zeitung, and Neue Ruhr Zeitung.

UN Watch in Neue Zürcher Zeitung : “UNRWA’s entire local management is involved with Hamas”

On the eve of his appearance before the German Parliament, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung interviewed Hillel Neuer on UN Watch’s latest report exposing UNRWA. Following are highlights.

NZZ: Mr. Neuer, your report is titled “Schools in the Grip of Terror.” Reading it, one encounters familiar accusations: that UNRWA employs staunch Hamas supporters who indoctrinate students with hatred of Jews. What is new about your research?

Hillel Neuer: Our report documents in detail that the entire local management of UNRWA is involved with Hamas – not just a few ordinary employees. Take Lebanon, for example: there, Fateh al-Sharif, the head of Hamas in Lebanon, was in charge of UNRWA’s educational infrastructure. The situation is not much different in the Gaza Strip. Although Hamas official Suhail al-Hindi left UNRWA in 2017, he has continued to exert influence on the organization ever since.

NZZ: You are considered one of the harshest critics of UNRWA in the Western world. What is going wrong at the UN relief agency?

Hillel Neuer: The very structure of UNRWA is questionable. Swiss UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini leaves operational business almost exclusively to the approximately 30,000 local employees. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, 10 percent of them in Gaza alone have close ties to the terrorist organizations Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad…

There is no other conflict in the world in which refugee status has been passed down to the fourth generation. Astonishing, isn’t it? For the approximately 900,000 Jews who had to flee to Israel from many countries in the Arab world after 1948, there was and is no such separate relief agency. They integrated into their new homeland.

Instead of contributing to the solution of the Palestinian refugee problem, UNRWA perpetuates it for all eternity. It also contributes to the political radicalization of the people.

UNRWA teachers tell schoolchildren that one day they will be able to “return” to Israel by taking the land from the Israelis. The UNRWA leadership stood by and watched. Then, on October 7, 2023, Hamas cruelly fulfilled this promise.

Hillel Neuer in Berliner Morgenpost: “UNRWA is a nihilistic death cult”

The briefing at the German Bundestag and UN Watch’s new report were also covered in the Berliner Morgenpost. The article was syndicated across numerous other newspapers in Germany.

By Madeleine Janssen, Head of Foreign Desk

“Germany is currently the largest contributor to UNRWA with $200 million a year,” said Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of the Geneva-based UN Watch.

At a recent briefing in Berlin, the Canadian lawyer emphasized: “UNRWA teachers are terrorist leaders.” What once began as an altruistic project to educate children in Gaza has since become “completely corrupt.” As evidence, Neuer presented research on several high-ranking UNRWA teachers.

One of them: Suhail al-Hindi. UN Watch paints a picture of an established terrorist – photos show al-Hindi with Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. He is also said to have maintained close ties with the long-time leader of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh.

The NGO investigation further suggests that he was part of the Hamas delegation in Qatar. “When he was finally suspended by the United Nations because of his connections,” says lawyer Neuer, “the UNRWA schools closed in protest – for three months!”

Al-Hindi was subsequently allowed to continue working. According to Neuer, UNRWA claimed to have been unaware of the man’s involvement with Hamas.

It would have been interesting to know what former UNRWA representatives had to say about the allegations. German UN diplomat and former UNRWA chief Matthias Schmale did not respond to a request for comment from this newsroom.

According to legal scholar Hillel Neuer, there is a reason why the Palestinian population clings so vehemently to UNRWA: “While any other aid organization can distribute food and medicine, only UNRWA promises Palestinians a “right of return.”

“UNRWA is perpetuating the conflict,” said Hillel Neuer. He added that they are allowing the organization to “poison the Palestinians with a nihilistic death cult.”

UN WATCH’S 200-PAGE REPORT PROVING UNRWA TERROR TIES

After speaking in the German Parliament, UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer traveled to Rome last month to present the organization’s 200-page report, Schools in the Grip of Terror, uncovering for the Italian public and decision-makers how Hamas terror chiefs control UNRWA’s education system.

Speaking in a packed hall in the Italian Senate, Neuer presented new evidence that Hamas chiefs simultaneously served as UNRWA school principals, union leaders, and senior educators — while openly glorifying terrorism, recruiting children into militant activity, and blocking reforms such as Holocaust education.

FRANCESCA ALBANESE SERVED WITH COURT PAPERS

At the Senate in Rome, Neuer also presented UN Watch’s recent legal memorandum, filed with the United Nations legal counsel, making the case that Francesca Albanese’s purported reappointment in April was carried out in complete violation of the UN’s own rules, and was therefore null and void.

As a result, UN Watch demonstrated that Albanese no longer enjoys UN immunity, and can be sued, sanctioned, and prosecuted. On July 9th, she was sanctioned. On September 8, she got sued. Last weekend, she was startled to be officially served by a Sheriff with court papers in the middle of a lecture event in South Africa.

MEDIA COVERAGE ACROSS ITALY

On the eve of Neuer’s testimony at the Senate in Rome, Italy’s national newspaper La Stampa published an article on UN Watch’s report. Neuer was also interviewed live on Radio anch’io, a leading current affairs program.

A day after his Senate presentation, Neuer gave a press conference at Rome’s Palazzo Grazioli for the Foreign Press Association, broadcast live by Radio Radicale.

In addition, Neuer’s visit and UN Watch’s report on UNRWA’s terror ties were reported widely by Italian media outlets Il Tempo, Il Riformista, Formiche, and more.

Likewise, local Jewish publications — including Bet Magazine, Mosaico, and Shalom — also reported on Neuer’s visit, and advocacy groups like Project Dreyfus promoted Neuer’s testimony on social media.

“The Senate hosted a well-attended hearing on Information and Truth in the Middle East Conflict. Former Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi opened the proceedings, featuring several speakers. But it was Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, who stole the show.”

“His report brought to the table facts, numbers, and names, that nail UNRWA to embarrassing responsibilities. According to UN Watch’s investigations, a significant portion of senior educators in Gaza have ties to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Educational materials that incite violence, maps that erase Israel, social media posts that glorify terrorism: this is how generations of students are educated not for peace, but for hatred.”

“The report also exposes the agency’s substantial inertia: principles of neutrality never applied, ‘zero tolerance’ policies announced but never enforced. Hamas, Neuer noted, maintains tight control over schools and programs, preventing any reform. For years, UNRWA has rejected the introduction of transparency tools—such as biometric systems for the refugee census—and yielded to political pressure from armed groups.”

GENEVA, August 13, 2019 — The UN’s anti-racism committee today began a mandatory two-day review of the policies and practices of the Palestinian Authority, whose delegation responded by criticizing experts of the 18-member panel for asking about antisemitic incitement based on evidence provided by international human rights group UN Watch, whose 32-page shadow report on Palestinian discrimination was labeled by the PA as “propaganda.”
As reported by the Jerusalem Post, members of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) challenged the PA after they had been briefed by UN Watch, NGO Monitor and Impact-SE.
“Several NGO reports pointed out antisemitic and anti-Israel prejudice and incitement to hatred, especially in the [Palestinian] media and speeches of state officials. Can the state party [the PA] provide any explanation in this regard?” asked panel member Chinsung Chung of South Korea.

Silva Albuquerque, another expert on the UN committee, asked for concrete examples of how the PA tackled antisemitism in its school textbooks.
Member Bakari Sidiki Diaby asked: “Is there a Jewish minority in Palestine, and how is the Jewish community represented in the media? How are the other minorities represented?”
Prior to their questioning of the PA, members of the CERD were addressed by UN Watch Legal Advisor Dina Rovner, in a meeting with non-governmental organizations, as well as in a private briefing. Rovner highlighted the gross and systematic antisemitism by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, as documented in UN Watch’s written submission. (Click here for both UN Watch oral statements presented today.)
UN Watch also called attention to the failure of the Palestinian delegation—headed by Ammar Hijazi, deputy foreign minister for multilateral affairs—to acknowledge any of this in its submissions to the world body.
UN Watch’s presentations today, together with its prior written submission published on the UN website, provided resources which committee members used in their questioning of the Palestinian delegation, and placed on record key facts before a global audience.
“Our shadow report and presentations today exposed how the PA’s submissions to the committee completely ignored racist and discriminatory Palestinian practices, and how they tried to evade responsibility by shifting the focus of the review onto Israel,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.
Notably, groups like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International—which lobbied for the Palestinians to be recognized as a state for the purpose of signing human rights treaties, saying this would hold them to account—failed to make any submission or statement for this first-ever review of the Palestinians by the UN anti-racism committee.
Out of some 40 Palestinian human rights groups who appeared in the same UN building when Israel was reviewed earlier this year, only one, Al Haq, appeared at today’s review of the Palestinian Authority. This raised questions as to whether their primary focus in on improving Palestinian human rights, said Neuer.
UN Watch’s detailed submission revealed that the PA and Hamas routinely violate international commitments to combatting racism, through laws, policies, and statements aimed at denying any Jewish rights in Israel or the Palestinian-controlled territories.
By contrast, in its own report, the PA sought to shirks its obligations as a party to the anti-racism convention by failing to address the problem of racism in Palestinian law and society, and, as the UN experts realized, instead repeatedly tried to blame Israel.
“The PA exploits the reporting process of the anti-racism committee as yet another UN vehicle to attack Israel. This is a waste of the committee’s time and resources, as Israel is subject to its own review later this year,” said Neuer.
Highlighting deficiencies in the PA’s report, UN Watch urged the anti-racism committee to focus the review on Palestinian laws and policies in eight key areas, including incitement to antisemitic racial hatred by Palestinian officials, demonization of Israeli Jews in state-sponsored media and educational facilities, and Palestinian persecution of minority Christians and Samaritans. (Click here for UN Watch’s statements.)
Over nearly two hours of presenting before the committee today, the PA blamed Israel for its problems related to discrimination, and devoted only a few moments to its own policies and practices. The Palestinian delegation included Majdi Hardan, legal adviser at the Ministry of Justice, and Haitham Arar, head of the interior minister’s democracy and human rights unit.
The Palestinian delegates told the committee of their life “under Israel’s racist occupation” and “the presence of apartheid,” contrasted with the PA’s alleged “commitment to work towards harmonizing legislation with the UN conventions.”
In a rare plea, the PA delegation asked for “slack” from the committee for its first-ever review.
Several of the UN experts pressed the PA on its failure to implement anti-discrimination policies, requesting proof that textbook materials had been reviewed for antisemitic material, and asking for explanations for Palestinian officials’ documented incitement to terrorism.
The UN panel’s review of the Palestinians continues tomorrow morning.
“We trust that the committee will continue its work to hold the PA and Hamas accountable for their flagrant violations of the UN’s convention against racism and the principles of international human rights law,” added Neuer.

GENEVA, July 11, 2018 — UN agencies, officials and experts tasked with combating racism have failed over the past decade to act or even speak out against global hatred, incitement and violence against Jews, according to a major new report submitted today to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres by UN Watch, the Geneva-based human rights organization that monitors the performance of the world body according to the yardstick of its Charter.
The report’s findings are disturbing and clear: key UN agencies, officials and experts are, with few exceptions, turning a blind eye to escalating antisemitism worldwide, from Toulouse to Mumbai.
The UN itself recently corroborated UN Watch’s findings. Speaking at a Geneva meeting on June 28th, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion, acknowledged the “scandalous lack of attention” paid by the UN human rights system to antisemitism.
UN Watch today called on Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to acknowledge the world body’s chronic failure to address antisemitism, and to set forth an action plan that will mobilize key UN stakeholders, and in particular those within its human rights machinery, to exercise their responsibilities to confront bigotry, hate or violence targeting Jews worldwide.
In its letter to the Secretary-General, UN Watch urged the world body to convene a conference to examine how the world body can begin to remedy its neglect of antisemitism.
The 40-page report, entitled “The United Nations and Antisemitism: 2008-2017 Report Card,” was presented at the Israeli Knesset this week, at a parliamentary hearing addressed by Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked, Opposition Leader Isaac Herzog, former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler and other parliamentarians and experts on antisemitism.
“I don’t believe the United Nations is irrelevant,” said Knesset member Yair Lapid, the leader of the Yesh Atid party who chaired the hearing. “The UN has a role to play. We call upon UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres to change direction.”
In 40 pages and 300 footnotes, the report asks what the UN has done to counter classical antisemitism; it does not focus on the highly pertinent albeit distinct question of whether the UN’s singling out and demonization of Israel, the only Jewish state, amounts to the UN itself contributing to antisemitism.

________

KEY FINDINGS OF THE REPORT:
• The United Nations has a unique role to play in combating deadly attacks against Jews escalating worldwide over the past decade, from Kansas to Copenhagen, Mumbai to Toulouse. Anti-racism is the defining ideology of the United Nations and its human rights mechanisms. Yet all too often, as documented in this report’s comprehensive examination of the actions of key UN officials, agencies and experts over the past decade, it seems that the UN sees racism everywhere, and antisemitism nowhere.
• There are notable exceptions. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, like his predecessors Ban Ki-moon and Kofi Annan, has made a series of positive statements about combating antisemitism. The General Assembly hosted an informal meeting on antisemitism in 2015. The UN’s Holocaust Outreach Program commemorates and teaches about the Holocaust, reaching broad audiences worldwide.
• UNESCO recently released a publication with the OSCE aimed at assisting policymakers in addressing antisemitism through education. Notwithstanding its repeated adoption of one-sided resolutions condemning Israel and downplaying the ancient Jewish heritage of Jerusalem and Hebron, UNESCO also hosted, after an initial postponement, an exhibit on the 3,000-year-old connection of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel.
• Regrettably, however, the exceptions prove the rule. Over a decade when Jews were targeted for slaughter in India, France, Belgium, Denmark and elsewhere—whether in a Jewish school, museum, synagogue or supermarket—the UN’s primary agencies and officials for addressing discrimination have, for the most part, turned a blind eye to antisemitism. UN plenaries like the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council, which enact hundreds of resolutions a year, including on subjects related to racial and religious discrimination, failed to address the threat of antisemitism, other than in a few passing words included in general statements. Until 2010, both the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council adopted annual resolutions focused on the “defamation of Islam and Muslims,” mandating special reports, yet there was never one resolution to address anti-Jewish hatred and violence.
• During the course of his tenure from 2006 to 2016, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued more than 100 condemnations of terror attacks worldwide. When the attack targeted religious worshippers, mosques or Christian clergy, his condemnations included strong language against the targeting of people for their religious beliefs. By contrast, he refrained from employing similarly strong language regarding terrorist attacks against Jewish targets, many of which he did not condemn at all. In a decade marked by shocking antisemitic violence, Mr. Ban was often silent. While he proved quick to condemn an anti-Muslim film or statement by private parties, he failed to address pervasive, state-sanctioned incitement to antisemitism in the Middle East, including Iran’s Holocaust denial, Jewish conspiracy theories, and calls to commit genocide.
• High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, who served from 2008 to 2014, was likewise quick to condemn a film perceived as anti-Muslim, as well as “malicious” cartoons by Charlie Hebdo. Yet in the face of murderous physical attacks against Jews, such as the shooting at a Toulouse Jewish school, Pillay was typically silent. Worse, Pillay and her office repeatedly smeared Jewish organizations as “single-issue lobbyists” for seeking to prevent antisemitism from infecting the UN’s 2009 “Durban II” conference on racism.
• Current High Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein has not only turned a blind eye to antisemitic incitement and violent attacks—even though he has addressed incitement against Muslims in Myanmar—but he has repeatedly engaged, as have other UN officials, in what Holocaust scholar Deborah Lipstadt has called softcore Holocaust denial, through a series of statements that seek to de-Judaize the Holocaust.
• The UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteurs on racism and freedom of religion ought to be the first UN experts to speak out against anti-Jewish discrimination and violence. However, as a rule, successive mandate-holders over the past decade have failed to comment on rising antisemitism, including the murderous incitement against Jews in the Arab and Muslim world, or deadly attacks in Europe and elsewhere. By contrast, they did speak out on behalf of other targeted groups.
• Expert bodies like the Human Rights Committee, which review country compliance with international treaties, should be affirmatively monitoring state parties for any antisemitic incitement or violence which puts Jews at risk, or infringes their rights to freely practice the Jewish religion. Yet an examination of the Human Rights Committee’s concluding observations for numerous state parties—including Arab and Muslim states where antisemitic incitement is rampant, as well as other states that have witnessed high levels of antisemitic incidents in the last ten years—reveals that antisemitism is of limited concern.
• Likewise, the concluding observations for numerous countries of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD)—including for their reviews of Argentina, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, the UAE, Ukraine and Venezuela—rarely mentioned violent attacks on Jews or other forms of antisemitism, though they did devote attention to Islamophobia or discrimination against Roma. Moreover, though antisemitic incitement from the Arab and Muslim world has inspired horrific antisemitic attacks worldwide, the CERD addressed hate speech in these countries only when the speech was directed at other groups—but never when the target was Jews.

GENEVA, October 30, 2017 – The United Nations must “review Israel’s status as a law-abiding member” of the world body by declaring its “occupation as illegal,” said Michael Lynk, the U.N. rapporteur for Palestinian human rights, as he called for the international community to adopt new measures against the Jewish state, at a U.N. press briefing on Thursday.
What if, “all of a sudden Israelis wanting to travel abroad needed to have visas [or if] Israel wouldn’t get preferential trade agreements with the EU?” Lynk asked. “What if the many forms of military, economic or academic cooperation with Israel would now end?”
However, Lynk was challenged repeatedly by journalists in wake of a UN Watch letter, released ahead of his U.N. appearance, documenting how his biased mandate systematically ignores Palestinian Authority and Hamas torture and arbitrary arrest, and Palestinian stabbings, car ramming attacks and shootings committed against Israelis.
UN Watch’s letter cited precedents to demonstrate how Lynk could address Palestinian abuses even though his mandate from the U.N. is to “investigate Israel’s violations.”
Former rapporteur John Dugard once reported on Palestinian misuse of the death penalty, saying that it would be ‘irresponsible’ for a U.N. human rights expert to ignore it. Another former rapporteur, Hannu Halinen, cited Palestinan Authority torture, and called for his one-sided mandate to be reformed.
Lynk told reporters he was ‘unaware’ he could raise violations that were committed by Palestinians, even though UN Watch has repeatedly sent him reports and letters saying exactly that.
MICHAEL LYNK PRAISES ANTI-SEMITES, MEETS WITH HAMAS AFFILIATES
In June, when UN Watch’s Dan Smith challenged Lynk’s silence on Palestinian abuses at a U.N. meeting, the U.N. rapporteur replied that no group had ever before asked him to do so.
However, Lynk only meets with groups that share his partisan approach, including those he assembles in Amman.
For example, Lynk recently met with the Hamas front group known as PRC, and with the virulent antisemite Sameh Habeeb, who posts antisemitic videos by former KKK grand wizard David Duke, publishes stories accusing Israelis of stealing organs in Haiti, and articles claiming that World Wars I and II were both Jewish plots.
Earlier this year, Lynk’s annual report to the Human Rights Council praised Palestinian antisemite Manal Tamimi as a “human rights defender.”
As exposed by NGO Monitor, however, the activist Tamimi has tweeted about “Vampire zionists” who celebrate “by drinking Palestinian bloods” and she advocates a “third Intifada” for people to “rise up and kill all these zionist settlers everywhere.”
Lynk was forced to remove the section on Tamimi in a new edition of his report, but he never acknowledged or apologized for his praise of a racist advocate of violence.

Zimbabwe tyrant Robert Mugabe (left) was appointed Goodwill Ambassador by WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

The head of the U.N.’s World Health Organization revoked the appointment of 93-year-old Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s brutal dictator, as a “Goodwill Ambassador” who would help fight disease.
The reversal came after UN Watch sounded the alarm, launching a protest campaign against what it called an absurd, immoral and insulting decision.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the US and UK governments joined the chorus of voices expressing shock and outrage.
Now UN Watch is calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances that led to the suspect appointment.
UN Watch’s protest of the WHO appointment was quoted extensively by the New York Times, Reuters, Washington Post, CNN, and by more than 100 other news outlets worldwide, as well as by thousands on Twitter and Facebook.
UN Watch director Hillel Neuer was interviewed by Radio France and Canada’s CTV News (click for video).
MEDIA QUOTES
CNN – Mugabe picked as goodwill ambassador
The World Health Organization is under fire after it selected Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador. “The government of Robert Mugabe has brutalized human rights activists, crushed democracy dissidents and turned the breadbasket of Africa — and its health system — into a basket case,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, which monitors the performance of WHO, a UN agency that focuses on international public health. “The notion that the UN should now spin this country as a great supporter of health is, frankly, sickening.”
CNBC – Choice of Mugabe as WHO envoy shocks human rights groups
Hillel Neuer, executive director of the Geneva-based group UN Watch, issued a statement late on Friday criticizing the choice by WHO, a United Nations agency.
Newsweek – Beyond satire? African dictator Mugabe, former President Obama and Saudi Arabia have more in common than you think
The appointment of Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador of the World Health Organization (WHO) has been denounced by human rights groups. Newsweek reviewed five more international appointments that have caused consternation.
In 2015, the United Nations came under fire for handing Saudi Arabia a role on its human rights council, and in April there was renewed criticism when the Kingdom was given a role on the UN women’s rights commission.
Hillel Neuer, director of UN Watch, pointed to multiple restrictions placed on women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, likening the move to “making an arsonist into the town fire chief.”

U.N. Elects Qatar, Congo, Pakistan to Top Human Rights Body

The U.N. General Assembly yesterday elected Qatar, Congo and Pakistan to its top human rights body, joining existing members such as Saudi Arabia, China, Cuba and Venezuela.
U.S. ambassador Nikki Haley warned the U.N. in June to stop electing “the world’s worst human rights offenders.”
Other non-democracies to win seats were Afghanistan, Angola, and Nigeria.
UN Watch published a comprehensive study showing how the candidates failed to meet the U.N.’s own minimal membership criteria.
Despite a pledge by 47 EU and other countries to vote “based on human rights considerations” and to strive for competitive slates, oppressive regimes won easily, many on uncontested lists.
“By picking Qatar, Congo and Pakistan as world judges of human rights, the U.N. is once again asking the foxes to guard the chickens,” said UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer. “It’s absurd, immoral, and offensive.”
UN Watch was quoted extensively on the elections by media worldwide including the Associated Press, Deutsche Presse-Agentur, and Spain’s EFE news agency.

U.S. Pulls Out of UNESCO, Citing Anti-Israel Bias

The U.S. decision to pull out of UNESCO followed failed efforts to reform the agency, said UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer in an interview on i24News TV. While UNESCO’s mission to promote education, science and culture is noble, the agency has become hijacked by dictatorships.
The election on Friday of former French culture minister Audrey Azoulay—who is Jewish—will have no impact on the most consequential UNESCO decisions, which are made by a governing board that includes Iran and Sudan.
Examples of how UNESCO became a rogue agency abound.
Here are a few:
– Anti-Israeli Obsession: Between 2009-2014, UNESCO adopted 46 resolutions against Israel; 1 on Syria; and none on Iran, Sudan, North Korea, or any other country in the world. See here and here. Betraying its mission to protect world heritage and culture, UNESCO repeatedly denies the ancient Jewish heritage and culture of Jerusalem and Hebron, which was this year declared a Palestinian World Heritage site.
– Electing Syria’s Assad to Human Rights Committee: In 2011, UNESCO elected Syria’s Assad regime to its human rights committee. When UN Watch exposed the outrage and launched a protest campaign, the U.S. and UK were embarrassed and tried to remove Syria — but failed to get enough votes. UNESCO chief Irina Bokova criticized Syria’s membership but was powerless to remove the Assad regime.
– Glorifying Violence: In 2013, UNESCO enshrined “The Life and Works of Ernesto Che Guevara” in its “Memory of the World Register” — even though Che Guevara led the first firing squads of the Cuban Revolution, and founded Cuba’s “labor camp” system that would later be used to incarcerate gays, dissidents and AIDS victims. President Obama’s representative, Ambassador David T. Killion, demanded that UNESCO’s program “not be used as a tool to glorify or legitimize violence.” His objection was ignored.
– Naming Prizes for Dictators: UNESCO created a $3 million prize in 2008 named for and funded by President Obiang, the brutal and corrupt dictator of Equitorial Guinea. His state radio once announced that Obiang “can decide to kill” without anyone calling him to account because he is in “permanent contact” with God, “who gives him this strength.”
– World Philosophy Day” in Tehran: In a 2010 address, UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova spoke of her efforts over two years to sponsor a “Philosophy Day” in Tehran — despite Iran’s horrific record of repression and censorship after the fraudulent elections of 2009. Absurdly, Bokova said “I hope this will be a major opportunity for free intellectual debates around the topics.” Eventually UNESCO was forced to cancel the event.

PLO REPS IN SHOCK — U.N. DELEGATES STUNNED
PM Netanyahu Hails ‘Extraordinary U.N. Moment of Truth’

When the U.N. human rights council held a special debate last week targeting Israel — with the PLO, Syria, Iran, North Korea and dozens of other dictatorships accusing the Jewish state of “atrocities” and “apartheid” — UN Watch stunned the assembly by bringing a surprise guest speaker to deliver a response and rebuke that literally caused heads to turn in stunned disbelief, with the PLO delegates visibly in shock; see photos below.
The chamber, pretending to be concerned about “human rights in Palestine,” was completely silenced. Suddenly, the tables were turned.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted the UN Watch video of Yousef’s speech to his millions of Facebook followers, and declared the intervention an “extraordinary moment of truth in the U.N.”
Within only a few days, UN Watch’s video has now been viewed 2.9 million times, making it the single most-watched speech in the history of the United Nations.

Heads turned. Eyes bulged. Then total silence. “Judged solely on their body language and facial reactions,” said one body language expert, “the Palestinian U.N. representatives are saying nothing but ‘We’re guilty!’ — absolutely guilty of what the UN Watch speaker said about them.”

Reaction Worldwide

Social Media

UN Watch’s video of the speech has gone viral, drawing more than 3 million views on UN Watch’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter platforms. Internet traffic to the speech was so intense that it caused UN Watch’s website to temporarily crash. The speech was shared over 100,000 times on Facebook, and ranked as the #13 trending video on YouTube.
Thousands worldwide wrote comments and sent messages to UN Watch hailing the speech as an “epic” moment.
Even Russia’s state-controlled Sputnik News admitted that Twitter was “stunned” and “all abuzz” from the Hamas founder’s son blasting the Palestinian Authority.
Global Media Impact
* Australia’s Courier Mail published an editorial on the speech that emphasized its take-away lesson: “You could hear a pin drop. Truth can have that impact. The West needs to stop pretending there is a moral equivalency. Ex-Hamas member Mosab Hassan Yousef addressing the U.N., Sept. 25, 2017.
Today the UN Human Rights Council held what we call “Hate Israel Day,” its regular agenda item targeting the Jewish state. No other country in the world—not Syria, Iran, or North Korea—has its own agenda item.
But you had to see the face of the PLO representative when our surprise speaker took the floor. Because he uttered piercing words of truth never said before inside the United Nations.

####
Statement by United Nations Watch
36th Session, U.N. Human Rights Council
Delivered by Mosab Hassan Yousef
Video to be posted tomorow

Thank you, Mr. President.
I take the floor on behalf of UN Watch.
My name is Mosab Hassan Yousef. I grew up in Ramallah as a member of Hamas.
I address my words to the Palestinian Authority, which claims to be the “sole legitimate representative” of the Palestinian people.
I ask: where does your legitimacy come from?
The Palestinian people did not elect you, and they did not appoint you to represent them.
You are self-appointed.
Your accountability is not to your own people. This is evidenced by your total violation of their human rights.
In fact, the Palestinian individual and their human development is the least of your concerns.
You kidnap Palestinian students from campus and torture them in your jails. You torture your political rivals. The suffering of the Palestinian people is the outcome of your selfish political interests. You are the greatest enemy of the Palestinian people.
If Israel did not exist, you would have no one to blame. Take responsibility for the outcome of your own actions.
You fan the flames of conflict to maintain your abusive power.
Finally, you use this platform to mislead the international community, and to mislead Palestinian society, to believe that Israel is responsible for the problems you create.
Thank you.

GENEVA, Aug. 29, 2017 – United Nations Watch, the Geneva-based non-governmental human rights group, announced today that Dr. Andres Roemer, the former Ambassador of Mexico to UNESCO, will be the recipient of its 2017 Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award, to be presented at its annual Human Rights Luncheon in Geneva on Monday, September 11.
Dr. Roemer is a renowned public intellectual, humanitarian, and author of 16 books. Click here for bio.
In October 2016, while serving as his country’s representative to UNESCO, Roemer refused to obey instructions from Mexico City to vote for an Arab-drafted resolution that denied the Jewish and Christian heritage of Jerusalem, and which referred to the Temple Mount only with Islamic and Arabic names.
Instead, in an unprecedented move, Roemer stood up for his beliefs and walked out of the room. His principled defiance cost him his job, but ultimately Mexico changed its position, announcing its withdrawal of support for the biased resolution.
“I am at peace with what I did,” said Roemer, after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month in Paris. “These votes do not have a place in an educational and cultural organization, and hurt us all.”
“It is now a great honor to receive this recognition and award from UN Watch, a leading voice for human rights,” added Roemer. Click here for morehttps://unwatch.org/en/

Above: In April, UN Watch released a new report at the Canadian Parliament, examining the Canadian government’s pledge to ensure “enhanced due diligence” on UNRWA as a condition of renewed funding. The report reveals dozens of cases of UNRWA teachers inciting jihadist terrorism and anti-Semitism online. Read: Report
GENEVA, Aug. 25, 2017 — Canada has just announced another $25 million of funding for UNRWA, the controversial UN relief agency for Palestinians.
UN Watch is gravely concerned that Canada, a world leader in combating racism, is yet again handing UNRWA millions of taxpayer dollars to fund teachers who endorse Hitler and advocate the murder of Jews.
Despite a detailed report that UN Watch presented at Parliament in April, identifying 60 more UNRWA employees who preach antisemitism and Jihadi terrorism, neither the Trudeau government nor UNRWA has informed UN Watch of a single UNRWA teacher who has been fired as a result. This calls into question Canada’s claim, when it announced its original $25 million funding in November, that UNRWA has a policy of “zero tolerance.”
The government’s new announcement that UNRWA will be hiring a “neutrality” coordinator is of little use so long as UNRWA sends the message that preachers of antisemitic hate and terror are welcome to teach before classrooms of vulnerable children. It’s not the Facebook posts that are the problem, it’s having Hitler admirers as teachers.
The Trudeau government promised that its funding would be accompanied by “enhanced due diligence,” including a “very robust oversight and reporting framework.” Yet evidence of UNRWA’s knowing employment of racists and terrorism supporters has been downplayed or dismissed by Ottawa, as when, in November, Bibeau said that allegations of “neutrality violations” have either been addressed, or are “simply unfounded.” Sadly, the truth is the opposite.
In April, UN Watch submitted the evidence of incitement directly to Prime Minister Trudeau (click here for letter), and demanded substantive action to ensure Canada is not funding teachers who advocate antisemitism and terrorism. UN Watch has yet to receive an answer.
