Though he’s never really been a favorite of the West, the Libyan dictator Gaddafi was courted by many from the West before the popular uprising broke out against him. A serious charge, among others, was an excessive closeness with the Tyrant of Tripoli.
This same accusation has now been raised in Switzerland against Jean Ziegler. A colleague of the emeritus professor of sociology vehemently demands that Ziegler quit his human rights mandate at the UN. Meanwhile, Jean Ziegler denies he ever supported Gaddafi. Andy Müller reports.
This undated, old photo is very unpleasant for Jean Ziegler today. The Geneva sociologist, seen on the left in the picture, visiting the Libyan dictator. Today Jean Ziegler insists that he’s never been a friend of Gaddafi’s. He explained his repeated visits as a merely “scientific interest.”
Jean Ziegler: “And even if your dialogue partner is a scoundrel, he is still a head of state, he knows a lot. And for me, as a sociologist, there is an obligation to know the world, isn’t there?”
It was 2008 when the UN Human Rights Council elected Jean Ziegler in a consultative committee. Since then Ziegler has been the official Swiss expert for human rights issues at the UN.
Pierre Weiss: “You cannot be for Gaddafi and at the same time be for human rights. And this contradiction apparently has not been understood by Mr. Ziegler, that the situation has got to change now, and I’d like to ask Mr. Ziegler: You have to leave your mandate now.”
But Jean Ziegler sees no reason for him to resign from his office at the UN Human Rights Council.
Ziegler: “There has never been a moment in which I have supported either internal or foreign policy acts in Libya.”
Really? In a 1989 report by United Press International, Jean Ziegler states he was a committee member of the Gaddafi Prize for Human Rights. And this article by America’s Time Magazine also quotes Jean Ziegler as member of the Prize’s Jury.
The Gaddafi Prize for Human Rights: an instrument of propaganda for the dictator. In 1996 the anti-Jewish activist Louis Farrakhan received the award. Numerous holocaust deniers and despots are among the prize winners.
Ziegler is not acceptable at the UN because of his connections with the Gaddafi Prize for Human Rights, according to the director of UN Watch. The organization… has been criticizing Jean Ziegler’s activities at the UN for years.
Hillel Neuer: “Jean Ziegler is the person who helped to create the Gaddafi Prize for Human Rights. Someone who supported a brutal dictator should not be a human rights expert at the UN. He should be fired.”
According to Time Magazine, Gaddafi transferred the amount of 10 million dollars to the Geneva foundation “Nord-Sud XXI” at the end of the 1980s. The foundation, according to the Libyan press agency, managed Gaddafi’s prize. And here turns up the name “Jean Ziegler.”
This is an extract of Geneva’s commercial registry of 2006 for the foundation “Nord-Sud XXI,” and the association carrying the same name. The Vice-President, as reported by this document, is Jean Ziegler. According to 10vor10’s research, Ziegler was listed as Vice-President up until 2009.
Ziegler: “I have never played a role in the Human Rights Prize. Period.”
“Then why are you mentioned as member of the jury? For example, you’re Vice-President of the organization which created and organized the Prize, the organization Nord-Sud, you were listed there in the commercial registry up till 2009.”
Ziegler: “This has nothing to do with the Prize, the Nord-Sud. That is the only non-governmental organization from the southern hemisphere.”
The Geneva sociologist Pierre Weiss doesn’t believe Ziegler. He has Libyan documents which even mention Jean Ziegler supposedly as recipient of the Gaddafi Prize in 2002.
Weiss: “This is, I believe, enough to show that he was one of the few Western intellectuals who worked for years with Gaddafi’s regime, and that he received the human rights prize from Gaddafi’s foundation.”
Jean Ziegler denies it. He claims never to have received Gaddafi’s prize. The Geneva sociologist’s connections with the Libyan dictator remain blurred.

Auch wenn er nie ein Liebkind des Westens, zwar hoffiert wurde Libyens Diktator Gaddafi von vielen aus dem Westen bevor der Volksaufstand gegen ihn ausbrach, unter dessen ist “zu grosse Nähe zum Tyrannen von Tripolis” ein böser Vorwurf geworden.
Genau dieser Vorwurf werde in der Schweiz jetzt gegen Jean Ziegler erhoben. Ein Berufskollege des emeritierten Soziologie Professors fordert vehement Ziegler müsse sein Menschenrechtsmandat bei der Uno ablegen. Jean Ziegler bestreitet indes Gaddafi je unterstützt zu haben. Andy Müller berichtet:
Dieses undatierte alte Photo ist Jean Ziegler heute unangenehm. Der Genfer Soziologe, links im Bild, auf Besuch beim libyschen Diktator. Heute betont Jean Ziegler er sei nie Gaddafis Freund gewesen: Seine wiederholten Besuche beim Diktator erklärte er mit einem rein wissenschaftlichen Interesse.
Ziegler (Schweizerdeutsch): “Und auch wenn der Gesprächspartner ein Halunke ist, er ist Staatschef, er weiss viel. Und für mich als Soziologe besteht eine Verpflichtung, die Welt kennen zu lernen, oder?”
Es war 2008 wählte der UNO-Menschenrechtsrat Jean Ziegler in einem beratenden Ausschuss. Ziegler ist seither der offizielle Schweizer Experte für Menschenrechtsfragen bei der UNO.
Das empört Pierre Weiss. Der Genfer Universitätsprofessor ist Vizepräsident der FDP Schweiz und ebenfalls Soziologe wie Ziegler.
Weiss: “Man kann nicht für Gaddafi sein und in der gleichen Zeit für die Menschenrechte. Und dieser Widerspruch ist offenbar noch nicht von Herrn Ziegler verstanden, dass die Lage muss sich jetzt ändern, und ich möchte Herrn Ziegler bitten: Jetzt müssen Sie weg von Ihrem Mandat.”
Doch Jean Ziegler sieht keinen Grund sein Amt beim UNO-Menschenrechtsrat niederzulegen.
Ziegler (Schweizerdeutsch): “Es gibt kein Moment indem ich je solidarisiert habe, mit irgendeinem Akt von Aussen- oder Innenpolitik von Libyen.”
Wirklich nicht? In einer Meldung der Nachrichtenagentur United Press International von 1989 sagt Jean Ziegler er sei Kommitteemitglied des Gaddafi Menschenrechtspreises. Und auch in diesem Artikel des amerikanischen TIME Magazins heisst es, Jean Ziegler sei Mitglied der Preisjury.
Der Gaddafi Menschenrechtspreis: Ein Propagandainstrument des Diktators. 1996 hat die Auszeichnung der anti-judischen Aktivist Louis Farrakhan erhalten. Mehrere Holocaustleugner und Despoten zählen zu den Preisträgern.
Ziegler sei bei der UNO nicht mehr tragbar wegen seinen Verbindungen zum Gaddafi Menschenrechtspreis, das sagt der Direktor von UN Watch. Die Organisation… kritisiert Jean Zieglers Aktivitäten bei der UNO seit Jahren.
Hillel Neuer: “Jean Ziegler hat geholfen den Gaddafis Menschenrechtspreis zu schaffen. Jemand, der einen brutalen Diktator unterstützte, sollte nicht Menschenrechtsexperte bei der UNO sein. Er sollte entlassen werden.”
Laut TIME Magazin hat Gaddafi Ende der 80er Jahren an die Genfer Stiftung Nord-Sud XXI den Betrag von 10 Millionen Dollar überwiesen. Die Stiftung hat den Gaddafipreis laut dem libyschen Nachrichtenagentur organisiert. Und hier taucht der Name “Jean Ziegler” auf.
Das ist ein Auszug aus den Genfer Handelsregister von 2006 zur Stiftung Nord-Sud XXI und im gleichnamigen Verein. Vizepräsident ist nach diesem Dokument Jean Ziegler. Laut 10vor10 Recherchen war Ziegler bis 2009 als Vizepräsident aufgeführt.
Ziegler (Schweizerdeutsch): “Im Menscherechtspreis habe ich nie eine Rolle gespielt. Punkt, fertig.”
“Warum sind Sie dann angeführt in der Jury als Mitglied? Beispielsweise, sind Sie Vizepräsident von der Organisation, die den Preis organisiert und ausgerichtet hat, von der Organisation Nord-Sud, dort werden Sie im Handelsregister aufgeführt bis 2009.”
Ziegler: “Das hat nichts mit dem Preis zu tun, die Nord-Sud. Die ist die einzige Nichtregierungsorganisation von der südlichen Hemisphäre.”
Der Genfer Soziologe Pierre Weiss glaubt Ziegler nicht. Er besitzt libysche Dokumente, die Jean Ziegler 2002 sogar als angeblichen Träger des Gaddafipreises aufführen.
Weiss: “Das ist, glaube ich, genug zu beweisen, dass er jahrelang mit dem Regime von Gaddafi gearbeitet hat als ein der wenigen westlichen Intellektuellen, und dass er den Preis der Gaddafis Stiftung für Human Rights erhalten hat.”
Jean Ziegler dementiert. Er habe den Gaddafipreis nie angenommen. Die Beziehungen des Genfer Soziologens zum libyschen Dikator bleiben nebulös.
