UN Watch in the News — April 2025

UN Watch was quoted in media outlets around the world in April 2025 on numerous topics, including our campaign to stop Francesca Albanese’s illegitimate reappointment.

Iran’s regime is a fanatical Islamist regime which is not negotiating for peace. They’re negotiating to buy time. The regime has never been weaker. The regime has no legitimacy. They have no air defenses. In many ways, the regime is a sitting duck.

China is holding an official UN meeting tomorrow titled “Bullying and Unilateralism.” It is nothing less than Orwellian to see the Communist regime of China organizing a UN meeting accusing the United States—or any democracy—of bullying. Let’s recall, this is a regime that, as a matter of practice, bullies its own people and its neighbors. Any country that recognizes democratic Taiwan gets threatened by China. Any country that stands with the persecuted Uyghur minority gets bullied by China. So the notion that the Communist dictatorship of Xi Jinping is organizing a UN meeting to condemn the U.S. for bullying is Orwellian—and frankly brings new meaning to the word irony.

The first thing to understand with the Islamic regime in Iran is that these are fanatical extremists. They truly believe that God wants them to destroy Israel. They negotiate not to make peace, but to buy time. We have to remember that no deal is better than a bad deal. We need a deal that ends Iran’s nuclear program—not just something that delays it. We need verification. It has to be intrusive. It’s got to be permanent, enforceable. Anything less will be surrender.

So, sadly, the body that was meant to bring international peace, security, and fundamental freedoms has become very politicized. And even our countries—our democracies—whether it’s Brazil, whether it’s EU countries like France or the UK or Germany—do deals with countries. And you need some voices to speak out, to bring the victims. And we’ve brought victims who were poisoned and imprisoned—in Russia, in China, from Eritrea—and we are sort of the moral compass of the United Nations, to sound the alarm.

The UN refuses to stand firm against Hamas. Not even close. The UN Humanitarian Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths said the UN does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization. It’s a political faction. So sadly, the UN—sadly—is worthless. Most UN officials are unable to condemn Hamas. And even one of them—I mentioned her name—Francesca Albanese—has become kind of a propaganda, you could say, almost a spokesperson for Hamas inside the UN.

We have a 250-page report coming out. Screenshots of UNRWA staff posting every day: ‘I love Hitler,’ ‘Allahu Akbar,’ pictures of themselves with Hamas leaders. The head of the UNRWA teachers’ union in Lebanon, Fathi Sharif was the head of Hamas in Lebanon. The head of the UNRWA staff union in Gaza, Suhail al-Hindi, was elected to the Hamas politburo. UNRWA knew. These people were hiding in plain sight. Posting pictures every single day. And you and I are paying for it. If you’re Canadian, Swiss, European, British, you’re paying for it. If you’re American, you paid for it up until last year.

The UN was founded to promote human rights and prevent another Holocaust, but today, its highest human rights body is dominated by dictatorships who abuse the system to attack democracies—especially Israel. Our founder, Morris Abram, fought for civil rights alongside Martin Luther King Jr. He saw the UN losing its way and knew it had to be held accountable. We are here to speak truth to power and to defend the founding principles the UN has abandoned.

We need to recognize that antisemitism is not only a problem that hurts Jews, but also hurts the rest of society. A society that begins scapegoating the Jews—things do not go well. You know, we saw it with Germany. What began with antisemitism destroyed the country. We’ve seen it with other regimes over time. It’s a madness—a pathology—that turns the country away from looking at its own problems. That doesn’t end well for anybody.

“We’re talking about one of the world’s most blatant legitimizers of Hamas terrorism, who says literally that Israel does not have a right to defend itself,” UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer told Fox News Digital. “It’s a horrible statement on the state of the U.N. today.” UN Watch has long opposed Albanese and has worked to expose her alleged violations of the Code of Conduct.

Hillel Neuer interviewed by Brazil’s leading newspaper Estadão, April 8, 2025:

Sadly, the best indication of where to find the worst human rights abuses is to look at the world body that is meant to be investigating them: the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council. The members today include, for example, China, Cuba, Qatar, Sudan, and Vietnam.

The Iranian regime doesn’t negotiate to make peace, they negotiate to buy time, and no deal will be better than a bad deal. The only language that Tehran understands is maximum pressure—economic, diplomatic and strategic.

Hillel Neuer quoted in the Washington Times, “DOJ rejects immunity for UN Palestinian relief agency in boost for Oct. 7 families’ lawsuit,” April 26, 2025:

“This is a watershed moment for the victims of October 7th and for all those who seek justice,” said Mr. Neuer in a Friday statement. “UNRWA can no longer hide behind the cloak of diplomatic immunity. They must now answer for their role in enabling Hamas terrorism.”

Featured in The Jerusalem Post, “UN fails to prevent renewal of Albanese’s mandate until 2028 despite history of antisemitism,” April 5, 2025:

In October, United Nations Watch published a report titled “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing: Why Democracies Should Sanction UN Rapporteur Francesca Albanese,” urging democratic nations to impose sanctions on the special rapporteur and accusing her of promoting antisemitism, supporting terrorism, and spreading misinformation.

The report called for her removal, citing a series of statements and actions that violated UN impartiality standards and promoted hatred against Israel and the Jewish people. UN Watch demanded swift action to terminate her mandate.

Quoted in Jewish News Syndicate, “UN Watch denounces Qatar inclusion in UN women’s commission,” April 7, 2025:

No joke: Qatar was just elected to the U.N. Women’s Rights Commission. Under the regime’s misogynistic laws, Qatari women wishing to attend the next U.N. women’s rights summit will need to first seek permission from their male guardians. The inmates are running the asylum.

Featured in Germany’s Jüdische Allgemeine, “Francesca Albanese goes into extra time,” April 8, 2025:

Hillel Neuer called the Coordination Committee’s review process, which refused to prove any violations of the Code of Conduct against Albanese, a “farce.” The report was compiled last year after UN Watch submitted the allegations against Albanese to the United Nations. “Only now, a few days before the upcoming extension of Albanese’s mandate, is an audit report suddenly becoming public, after our complaint was simply ignored for months and we never received an official response,” Neuer told this newspaper.

Quoted in Israel’s Ynet, “The “objective” UN mission to the territories: The Italian who compared Israel to the Nazis,” April 5, 2025:

This is a dark day in the history of the United Nations. This is a body that began its journey with exemplary figures like Eleanor Roosevelt and René Cassin who led the field of human rights, and today is about to renew the appointment of one of the world’s most prominent antisemitic and pro-terror propagandists. It is shameful that none of the leading democracies in Western Europe dared to oppose. France and Germany are members of the Council, and could at least have demanded a vote—but instead, we are facing an automatic renewal.

Featured in Israel’s Bhol, “UN envoy who compared Israel to Nazis reappointed,” April 5, 2025:

UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer, who published a comprehensive report on Francesca Albenza’s activities, attacked the decision to renew her appointment, saying: “The UN has reappointed one of the world’s most well-known propagators of anti-Semitism to one of its senior positions, for another three-year term. We have submitted a 60-page report to the Council President that documents a series of statements in which she justifies terrorism.”

Featured in Israel’s Maariv, “A black day for Israel: ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ appointed as UN envoy to the territories,” April 5, 2025:

As early as 2022, the Geneva-based UN Watch organization published a report claiming that her appointment contradicted the principle that UN experts should act objectively and impartially.
