Some of the world’s worst human rights abusers took to the floor of the UN Human Rights Council on November 9th to critique the United States‘ human rights record, during a mandatory human rights review that all UN member states undergo every five years.
While the UN procedure known as Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is meant to scrutinize governments and thereby strengthen the basic rights and freedoms of their citizens, it also serves as a means for human rights abusing states to divert attention from their own misdeeds by criticizing democracies that have free elections, independent judiciaries and the rule of law.
Recent reviews have witnessed a majority of UNHRC representatives lavishing praise on Libya and Belarus.
In stark contrast, below are just some of the “recommendations” meted out to the United States by those least qualified to sit in judgment of its human rights record, including Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.
