SANDIE RINALDO: Now a high-ranking UN official is about to denounce Canada as a human rights abuser. In a speech tomorrow, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, will refer to Quebec’s bill 78 which sets conditions under which a street rally can be held. Pillay puts Canada on a human rights watch list and says, quote, “moves to restrict freedom of assembly continue to alarm me, as is the case in the province of Quebec in the context of student protests”. The remarks have drawn a rebuke from the Geneva-based group UN Watch which points out that the bill was adopted by a democratic assembly and already faces a court challenge.
