UN Watch in the News – January 2024

UN Watch was quoted in numerous media outlets around the world in January 2024, including on our exposé of 3,000 UNRWA teachers using a Telegram group that celebrated the Hamas October 7th massacre, the extreme bias of UN Women deputy chief Sarah Douglas, and the UNGA’s one-sided resolutions of 2023.

Quoted in the New York Post, House Republicans demand testimony from head of UNRWA over Hamas aid allegations, January 16th, 2024:

“UNRWA has also employed teachers who “regularly call to murder Jews” and teach from textbooks “that glorify terrorism, encourage martyrdom, demonize Israelis and incite antisemitism,” according to a joint March 2023 report by the non-governmental organization UN Watch and the Israeli non-profit Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education.”

Quoted in Brazil’s O Antagonista, UNRWA Members Commemorate the 7 October Massacre, January 10th, 2024:

“UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer called these actions an explicit encouragement of jihadist terrorism, coming straight from a UN agency .

Among the most shocking posts, Waseem Ula stands out , a professor who shared a video extolling Hamas attacks and posted a photo of a suicide vest, with the caption directed at Jews. Abdallah Mehjez , another teacher, is accused of encouraging civilians in Gaza to act as human shields by ignoring security alerts.

Shatha Husam Al Nawajha , a professor at UNRWA, was also highlighted in the report for responding to a post praising jihad with the phrase: “ May Allah grant them victory ”.

This UN Watch report is yet another warning about the UN, under the management of António Guterres. The actions of UNRWA teachers are described as direct violations of the UN Code of Conduct . The report calls for a firm and immediate response to combat the spread of incitement to terror within the UN itself.”

Quoted in Australian Financial Review, Saving lives or inciting hate? The UN body getting Australian aid, January 19th, 2024:

“But the UNRWA is also a lightning rod for criticism. A November report by UN Watch, a non-government organisation that monitors the world body, claimed at least 20 UNRWA staff members, including teachers and doctors, had glorified or justified the October 7 terror attack, incited violence or promoted antisemitism on their social media profiles.

A Telegram channel of 3000 teachers showed some celebrating the attacks, praising terrorists as “heroes”, sharing photos of dead Israelis and calling for hostages to be executed, UN Watch also found.

Other accusations over the years include rockets being stored at schools, textbooks being anti-Israel and funds being siphoned off by Hamas and other terror groups.”

Quoted in: Gazeta Do Povo, UN agency officials celebrated Hamas attacks on Israel, says NGO, January 15th, 2024:

“A report released in November by the NGO UN Watch , which oversees the actions of the United Nations (UN), revealed that officials from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) celebrated and justified attacks by the terrorist group Hamas against Israel, which occurred on October 7, 2023, which left around 1,200 dead.
The report documented 20 Facebook profiles of UNRWA employees that contained incitement to hatred, violence and genocide against Jews. Among the employees exposed by the report are teachers, school principals, doctors, psychologists and UNRWA administrators working in Gaza, the West Bank, Syria and Jordan.”

Quoted in: National Post, Teachers’ messages in UN agency’s Telegram channel glorified Hamas massacre, investigation finds, January 10th, 2024:

““This is the motherlode of UNRWA teachers’ incitement to jihadi terrorism,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.

The Telegram group provides a forum for Gaza-based education workers from the United Nations agency tasked with supporting Palestinians displaced during the 1948 war and their descendants.

Neuer exposed the pro-Hamas and pro-terrorism messages in a series of tweets, including calling out UNRWA teacher Waseem Ula, who posts information he receives from UNRWA Gaza education chief Sami Abu Kamil on salaries. Ula calls to kill Israelis and glorifies a terrorist who participated in the Oct. 7 massacre. He also shared a video celebrating Hamas attacks and posted a picture of a suicide bomb vest with explosives with the caption: “Wait, sons of Judaism.””

Quoted in National Review, U.N. Agency Teachers Cheered Hamas as October Attack Unfolded, Called for Execution of Jews in Group Chat, January 10th, 2024:

“More than 3,000 UNRWA teachers in Gaza belong to the social media group, which is hosted on the instant messaging platform Telegram and was exposed by the watchdog group UN Watch. The digital forum contains posts celebrating the massacre of October 7 just moments after it began.

“This is the motherlode of UNRWA teachers’ incitement to Jihadi terrorism,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.

UNRWA teacher Waseem Ula — username “A. Handsome” — administers the chat. Ula has posted information on salaries from UNRWA Gaza education chief Sami Abu Kamil. He has also called for the execution of Jews: “Let’s execute the first settler lives near [sic].””

Quoted in Italy’s Il Messaggero, Shock report on the UN, 3000 teachers paid by UNRWA supported Hamas rapes and killings on 7 October, January 10th, 2024:

“The investigation promoted on the UN by UN Watch, an NGO based in Geneva, has brought to light a disturbing aspect of the war in Gaza on which international attention is focusing, especially in view of the post-war period (whenever that may be). From the widespread surveys carried out, after the insinuations made by the Israeli and US governments, the researchers in the field have detected a shocking aspect: around 3 thousand teachers recruited and paid by UNRWA (the United Nations agency established to support the development of the Palestinians in the Strip) last October 7, a few hours after the Hamas anti-Semitic progrom, in a Telegram channel, they literally praised the terrorists for the rapes, the fires in the kibbutzim and the point-blank deaths of 1200 civilians.”

Quoted in: Welt, More context on Israel? Please, here he comes!, January 12th, 2024:

“For even more context: UN-Watch just published a report that thousands of UNWRA teachers celebrated the October 7 massacre in a chat group.”

Quoted in: Toronto Sun, We don’t have to quit the UN to call it out, January 6th, 2024:

“As Hillel Neuer, the Canadian-born executive director of the Geneva-based human rights group UN Watch noted at that time, that meant 60% of the 47 nations that made up the UNHRC at the start of 2021 were dictatorships, non-democratic countries and human rights abusers.

“Electing these dictatorships as UN judges on human rights is like making a gang of arsonists into the fire brigade. It’s logically absurd and morally obscene that the UN has elected to its top human rights body a regime (China) that herded 1 million Uyghurs into camps, arrested, crushed and disappeared those who tried to sound the alarm about the coronavirus, and suffocated freedom in Hong Kong.””

Interviewed by ILTV, January 18th, 2024:

Quoted in: Times of Israel, How can we trust the International Red Cross when it comes to the hostages? January 17, 2024:

“UN Watch, the Jerusalem Institute for Justice and hostage families have pointed to ICRC’s alarming social media posts in the aftermath of October 7th. UN Watch devastatingly unveiled that ICRC promoted the false Hamas story that Israel attacked and “destroyed” Al Ahli hospital, saying it was shocked and horrified that “hundreds were killed,” including “patients killed in a hospital bed,” and doctors were “losing their lives trying to save others.” We all know that ICRC’s comments were devoid of facts. Their accounts, in my estimation, served to instigate rage towards Jews and the State of Israel based on a lie.”

Quoted in: The Algemeiner, UN Agency Staff Praised Hamas’ Oct. 7 Massacre in Telegram Channel, Watchdog Reveals, January 11th, 2024:

“UN Watch exposed 20 specific Gaza educators who celebrated the massacre, ranging from regular teachers to even directors of a training center.

“This is the motherlode of UNRWA teachers’ incitement to jihadi terrorism,” UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer said in a statement. In a tweet accompanying the report’s release, he added that the agency was engaging in “the systematic incitement to terror.”

According to UNRWA, the agency has 702 schools with half a million students educated by nearly 20,000 teachers — including those who celebrated the Hamas attack.”

Quoted in: The Jerusalem Post, Telegram group with 3,000 UNRWA teachers praises October 7 attacks – UN Watch, January 10th, 2024:

“Hillel Neuer, the executive director of UN Watch, a Geneva-based non-governmental organization monitoring the United Nations, described the Telegram group as a hub for UNRWA teachers’ incitement to jihadi terrorism.

“This is the motherlode of UNRWA teachers’ incitement to jihadi terrorism,” he stated.

Hillel Neuer has taken to Twitter, urging the UN and its member states to take action. In a Wednesday thread on X, formerly Twitter, he documented numerous examples of the thousands of inflammatory posts within the group.”

Quoted in Norway’s NorgeIDAG, 3,000 Palestinian UN teachers paid tribute to the 7 October massacre, January 10th, 2024:

“In a group for Palestinian teachers employed in UN schools (UNRWA), on the Telegram social media platform, the bestial Hamas massacre in southern Israel on October 7 is praised and praised, the Jerusalem Post reports .

The group consists of 3,000 Palestinian teachers in the Gaza Strip and is filled with records that marked clear support for Hamas, according to a report by UN Watch .

In a post on X, UN Watch’s leader, Hillel Neuer, calls on the international community to deal with and react to Palestinian terrorists’ infiltration of UN organizations in the Palestinian territories.

Hillel Neuer was recently the keynote speaker at an event organized by Hjelp Jødene Hjem and Med Israel For Fred.

During his visit to Oslo, Neuer was also Henrik Beckheim’s guest on the podcast Henrik Beckheim Podcast .”

Quoted in Italy’s Ansa Med, Media, UNRWA employees participated in the 7/10 massacres, January 10th, 2024:

“today the newspaper Israel ha-Yom reports that the NGO ‘Un-Watch’ viewed internal messages exchanged on Telegram between UNRWA employees on 7 October, while the massacres were underway in Israel. These messages – according to the NGO – include expressions of joy and support for Jihad.

This information came in the aftermath of the visit to Israel in which US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Israel to provide greater support for humanitarian efforts in Gaza, also making use of UNRWA structures.”

Quoted in Brazil’s Gazeta Do Povo, UN spared several dictatorships and approved a high number of resolutions against Israel in 2023, January 7th, 2024:

“The year 2023 ended with Israel being the main target of resolutions voted at the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). The data was revealed through a survey released in December by the NGO UN Watch, which monitors the actions of the international entity

According to the survey, the Jewish State, which suffered a terrorist attack perpetrated by Hamas in October 2023, which left more than a thousand people dead in its territory, was the target of 14 resolutions approved by the UN deliberative body.”

Quoted in Brazil’s Ultimo Segundo, NGO accuses UN agency of supporting Hamas attack on Israel, January 11th, 2024:

“According to UN Watch, the online group is made up of more than 3,000 members and contains dozens of files with employee names, identification numbers, schedules and curricular materials.

According to the reports, many of the workers at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) – the UN agency that administers Palestinian schools and social services – explicitly praised the attack, in which around 3,000 terrorists crossed the border into Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, most of them civilians. Today, almost 130 people are still held captive by the terrorist group.

“This is the core of UNRWA professors’ incitement to jihadist terrorism,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, referring to the Telegram channel.”

Quoted in: Tichys Einblick, Numerous UNRWA employees implicated in hatred and violence against Jews, January 10th, 2024:

“Now the director of the Geneva-based UN Watch organization UN Watch, Hillel Neuer, points out a Telegram chat group on X that can be found under the name “UNRWA-GAZA” and is publicly accessible. According to the group description, it is intended “for all UNRWA education staff” in the Gaza region. More than 3,300 accounts gather here.

According to Neuer, the group is led by a certain Waseem Ula, who is supposed to post information about UNRWA salaries, such as whether they are paid on a certain day. The problem: Ula also shared, among other things, a picture of an explosive vest with the comment: “Just wait, sons of Judaism.” According to his LinkedIn channel, Ula is an English teacher. Neuer also made his UNRWA contract number public.”
